I was thinking for a long time now why not do a nail tutorial as I haven't done one in such a long time and love doing it. But wanted to do something diffrent and I kept seeing Piet Mondrian inspired nails on Instalgram. This artist's work came into fashion in 1965 by Yves Saint Laurent when he released his new collection. The 60s and 70s have been in for a long time now but I did see this dress earlier in 2011. Also the year when The Mondrian Swimwear Collection by Sarah Schofield came out and more designs for diffrent things such as shoes came out. Anyways I thought why not take a challenge...
This is what the result looked like. I was really pleased with it except for that the lines were not really straight as I was shaking a lot when doing this. As you can see my nail design is a lot more diffrent than the actual paintings. That is because I wanted to do it with a bit more colour splash because it still summer! I have taken a picture of my left and right hand. Obviously is the left hand the best but still the right hand wasn't that bad.
You don't need a lot of things for this design but the most important I would say is these brushes. Which I got a long time ago from Topshop so don't really remember the price. I have also used a black pen which I got from India so have no clue from where you can get it from in the UK. And the most important thing some eye popping colour which are really bright. Such as neon if I had any so Instead I have used Pastels. I have used Yellow, peach and pink from Rimmel London. And the mint plus Blue-ish purple-ish from Pro Rimmel.
First use the yellow and then the peach repeating the pattern on both hands. Then dry your nails. If you need to double coat your nail then please do as I have done by myself. For example the yellow is very light so by only applying one coat you can still see through it.
If you haven't chosen these colours then use light base coats for when doing the first step.

Then get the mint colour and apply some of it on your brush. Now you can just randomly apply squares or rectangle anywhere. Not more that 2 else it gets too much. You do this by getting some nail varnish at the tip of your brush then make an outline of a rectangle/square . When done this colour the inside bit. I have got quite a square type of brush so this was very handy for me. I have made my first square where my nail was already accidentally ruined. So try to think when you make these squares carefully.
Clean your brush first with some nails remover before doing the same with the pink as well. You then need to repeat this also with the purple blue-ish colour. The second photo is of how it looks like, without the black lines. If you like it this way then you don't need to draw the lines. If you do want to then apply a matte final touch from Rimmel to your nails.
If you like it like on the first picture by only outlining one colour. In my case I have chosen pink. Then you can leave it like this.
If you don't like it then apply it to all squares and think about which colour is overlapping which one, or do I still need to apply another coat to that square because you can still see through it.
Now you have created an amazing effect by only the black giving of shine.
And that is how you do this design. Hope you like it.
